Roots to Shoots is named in honor of the stewards of this land who came before us — our parents and grandparents, and most importantly, the Indigenous peoples who have cared for this place for thousands of years. They lived in deep relationship with the Earth, tending it with intention, conserving its resources, and honoring its natural cycles.
We recognize that this land carries history, wisdom, and responsibility. In that spirit, we are committed to practices that restore and protect it — conserving water, planting native and climate-appropriate species, nurturing healthy soil, and working with the rhythms of nature rather than against them.
We honor traditional Indigenous knowledge while also embracing modern science that deepens our understanding of ecosystems and sustainability. By blending time-tested practices with current research, we continue learning how to care for the land more thoughtfully and effectively.
Our mission is not only to steward the land today, but to pass on knowledge, skills, and reverence to the next generation. We believe restoration begins with relationship — and that each of us has a role to play in helping return balance to Mother Earth.

When people who knew my dad learn that I’m a gardener, they often smile and say, “Just like your dad.” There’s no greater compliment. It was a gift to learn from him, to build on what he taught me, and now to pass that knowledge on.
Some of my favorite memories are of eating sun-warmed fruit straight from our backyard. At the time, I didn’t realize what a privilege that was. My parents’ simple decision to plant fruit trees and berry bushes shaped my life in ways far deeper than a fresh snack. They cultivated in me a love of homegrown food, a sense of stewardship for the land, and an understanding that what we plant today can bless generations.
That foundation guides everything I do. I feel a responsibility to conserve water, to create habitat for pollinators, and to work with nature rather than against it. There is something profoundly therapeutic about watching the seasons unfold in your own yard. For me, gardening is therapy for the mind, healing for the body, and connection for the soul.
We have the opportunity — and the responsibility — to give these experiences to our children: to nurture their curiosity, their resilience, and their love for the natural world. My hope is to help others discover the beauty, abundance, and meaning that a simple backyard garden can bring.

Water is one of Utah’s most precious resources, and conserving it plays a critical role in protecting our environment and the future of the Great Salt Lake. In fact, an estimated 50–65% of municipal water use each year goes toward landscape irrigation. This highlights the importance of our choices in creating outdoor spaces, especially when considering options like edible landscapes and sustainable gardens. By designing and managing our yards more efficiently, including the implementation of vegetable gardens and waterwise gardens, we can dramatically reduce water use without sacrificing beauty. Thoughtful plant selection, smart irrigation systems, and climate-adapted landscapes allow you to enjoy a vibrant foodscape while using far less water. We’ll also help you navigate available rebates and incentive programs, making it easier and more affordable to upgrade your landscape. With the right approach, you can conserve water, lower your utility bills, and help safeguard Utah’s natural heritage for generations to come.

If you’re dreaming of a traditional garden filled with tomatoes, peppers, and squash, we can absolutely help you grow it beautifully and successfully. But what if your landscape could do even more? Have you considered creating an edible landscape with perennial foods—plants that nourish your family year after year with less replanting, less maintenance, and more long-term abundance? We specialize in unique, delicious, and visually stunning edible plants that blend seamlessly into your existing landscape, forming a beautiful foodscape. Many of these plants are “hidden in plain sight,” offering beauty and bounty without resembling a typical vegetable garden. Imagine a yard that not only feeds your family but also supports pollinators and looks incredible in every season. That’s the kind of sustainable gardens we love to create, including waterwise gardens that thrive with minimal resources.

Living in Utah means embracing the outdoors — wide open skies, mountain views, and time spent outside. Why not make your own yard part of that natural beauty? By incorporating native plants into your landscape, you create an edible landscape that truly belongs here. Native plants are adapted to Utah’s climate, require less water, and provide essential habitat for local pollinators, making them ideal for sustainable gardens. As you increase native plantings, you invite bees, butterflies, and other beneficial insects back into your yard, enhancing your foodscape. A thriving ecosystem does more than look beautiful; with more natural predators and pollinators at work, you can rely less on chemical pest control and create a healthier environment for your family. And when pollinators flourish, your vegetable gardens do too — leading to stronger plants and more abundant harvests. Beautiful, resilient, and productive — your waterwise gardens can do it all.
